This post has been lingering in my head without a form for a while now and I had feared publishing them due to the sensitivity of the issue, plus of course my own lack of motivation to blog anymore.
I'm sure we've all come to realise that the no.1 suicide hot spot is none other than one of Singapore's pride and joy: the MRT railway track.
It is saddening to know that there are so many poor people out there. I grumble about not having enough money to buy more pretty clothes, live in a bigger house etc. And we thought that no Singaporeans will find themselves close to the point of starvation. Yet it is happening.
It is more saddening for me, however, to know that people are actually helping those family members abandoned by the deceased by donating large amount of money.
Yes, you read me right. I am saddened by the fact that people are helping only after such tragedies had occurred. Why is it that such desperate ends had to be commited and hit the news headlines before help can be given? It is somehow signalling to me that the society is advocating "if you've hit a roadblock, kill yourself, and we'll help your family tide over the trouble water". What about those people who remain strong in the face of adversities? Aren't they worth our helping hands, if not more so?
Singaporeans are generous and full of sympathy, that I agree. But it is also undeniable that we are lazy (taking a reactive rather than proactive approach in stance like these) and misguided (encouraging the wrong things unintentionally).
