The Legend of the Ear

The BF has often tease me about my protruding ears - a characteristic of mine that made me really self-conscious when I was younger. But now, I embrace it with delight and feel no shame when I tie my hair into a ponytail. It's what I call, "my unique selling point."

But to be accurate, it's not really that much of an uniqueness. Protruding ears AKA "Bat Ears", found among 1 in about 100 people, is due to a defect in part of the cartilage (gristle) of the ear. They are nomal-sized, but may appear more apparent in children as ears are one of the first body parts to reach adult-size. The reference to "bats" is due to the similarity found between a bat's ear and the person found with the defect. (DUH!)

Jacky Wu's "The Guess Show", a variety show that invites hot babes (or hunks) that belongs to a certain theme, once invited 5 pretty girls with protruding ears.

In Singapore, our very own past star search winner, Ivy Lee is yet another example of a hot mama under the curse of the bat ears.

My favourite Hong Kong Actress, Ada Choi is also a lady plagued by bat-ears, but still look great none-the-less.

Lastly, to illustrate my point, even the mythical elves in Lord of the Rings, such as Arwen (played by the beautiful Liv Tyler) , has long, wind-defying ears.

Thus, it can be shown that bat-ears does not make a girl ugly. Weak attempts at hiding it will only make u seem unconfident of yourself. I am not advocating for one to purposefully highlight one's already noticeable ears to others. But rather, just be natural. Be proud of who you are.
