Yesterday I took a bus to see a dentist. Midway, a father carrying his lil daughter came on board. As they neared, I could see that the little girl had been crying, with her slightly red eyes and wet lashes. As she looked really cute, I could not help observing her. I saw her hiccupping as she forces down sobs. Then I remembered that when I was a lil girl like her too, and when I had to suppress my sobs because I would otherwise be reprimanded, I would experience the same hiccupping urge.
It makes me wonder how unnatural the society has made human beings. Are we supposed to be expressing our emotions freely by nature? Hence when we feel the urge to cry but could not do so, our body react strongly to the contradiction. But as grew up, we were constantly being punished for letting our unhappiness show. Slowly, we developed an "immunity" to this strong body reaction and thus could control our sobs more effectively.
But if this is so, is it healthy? Should we be doing this, going against nature? Is this how we want to educate the next generation? That it is NOT okay to be sad?
Just a food for thought.
